I believe having a child in the classroom who has recently immigrated would be a wonderful learning experience. The child could work with the family to make an All About Me poster with favorites things, memories, and possibly pictures from his or her home country. Students could see things they have in common, like favorite color or TV show, and learn about things they do not. This would be an opportunity for the teacher to bring in fiction and nonfiction books about the student's native country, and have the new student bring in objects/clothing/music/etc. to share. Of course this would be optional, and if a family member would rather come and talk with students about life in another country, that would be appreciated as well. The idea would be to celebrate diversity because it's worth celebrating!
