2.1. What is the definition of "maltreatment?"

The dictionary's definition of "maltreatment is: cruel or violent treatment of a person or animal.

In Section 7 of the Child Care Center Licensing Guidebook the definition is much more exhaustive. I have inserted the detailed list below. It breaks my heart that people have to trained in this area - the mistreatment of children should never occur.

Definitions of Abuse and Neglect:
Inflicting physical injury on a child by other than accidental means, causing death, disfigurement, skin bruising, impairment of physical or emotional health or loss or impairment of any bodily function

Creating a substantial risk of physical harm to a child’s bodily functioning

Committing or allowing to be committed any sexual offense against a child as defined in the criminal code, or intentionally touching, either directly or through clothing, the genitals, anus or breasts of a child for other than hygiene or child care purposes

Committing acts which are cruel or inhumane, regardless of observable injury (such acts may include, but are not limited to, instances of extreme discipline demonstrating a disregard for a child’s pain and/or mental suffering)

Assaulting or criminally mistreating a child as defined by the criminal code

Failing to provide food, shelter, clothing, supervision or health care necessary to a child’s health or safety

Engaging in actions or omissions resulting in injury to, or creating a substantial risk to, the physical or mental health or development of a child, and

Failing to take reasonable steps to prevent the occurrence of the above.

Not all acts of abuse involve physical harm to a child. Mental cruelty, threats, and failure to adequately supervise children are also types of child abuse or neglect.

2.2. How can you become familiar with the symptoms of child abuse, including physical, sexual, verbal and emotional abuse, and physical or emotional neglect?

The pamphlet, “Protecting the Abused and Neglected Child” DSHS 22-163(X)” outlines indicators of physical abuse and neglect, emotional abuse and neglect, and sexual abuse.

2.3. What do you need to do to follow state laws and community procedures that protect children against abuse and neglect?

Report to CPS any and all suspected occurrences of abuse.
If a child is in immediate danger also contact the local law enforcement.

2.1 - Maltreatment refers to any cruel or violent actions towards a person or animal.

2.2 - I think the best way to become familiar with the signs are research, study and learned how to recognize the signs. we should be concerned if we notice any significant changes in a child's behavior or any signs of bruises or injuries.

2.3 - We need to report to CPS - (Child Protective Service) and call the police

Maltreatment is cruel or violent treatment directed at a person or animal.

2.2. How can you become familiar with the symptoms of child abuse, including physical, sexual, verbal and emotional abuse, and physical or emotional neglect?
The best way to become familiar with the symptoms Is to do more research about what symptoms look like. They aren't always going to be physical symptoms that allow us to notice (such as bruises, cuts, etc.), the person/child could show mental signs as well such as being more quiet and reserved, etc.

2.3. What do you need to do to follow state laws and community procedures that protect children against abuse and neglect?
