Why is confidentiality important? What could be possible outcomes for not maintaining confidentiality?

Confidentiality is important because the information shared about students is sensitive and personal. If there is a breach of confidentiality this could cause a family pain and unnecessary hardship.

Confidentiality is important because information kept about children often includes personal and family information. This information is sensitive and must be given out to others with the parents' permission. Not maintaining confidentiality could result in legal issues, family hardship, and conflict within the childcare center.

Confidentiality is important to maintain the child and family privacy and even safety, that way we can gain their trust and respect.  We can share this confidential information with agencies, as well as with individuals who have legal responsibility for intervening in the child’s interest when we have reason to believe that a child’s welfare is at risk.

Confidentiality is important to respect a family's privacy, and to allow them to feel safe and not judged by the community they are a part of. A breach of confidentiality could result in the loss of trust of not only the family whose right to confidentiality was not upheld, but the loss of trust of many other families within the community. It could also cause bias against the family and child.

Confidentiality is important for the safety and welfare of not only the child in your care, but of their families. The information could also be sensitive and personal. For the betterment of the child, we want to keep good relationships with their parents. This begins with respecting their decisions of what information remains private.
