I would approach a parent or caregiver about the need for a referral for developmental screening of their child by preparing myself by working with a co-worker to help guide my discussion, sharing my observations objectively, not subjectively, by having a list of local resources available, and by ensuring all information will be kept confidential. Before talking to a parent or caregiver, I would need to consider what I am going to communicate to the parent, the word choice I am going to use to communicate this, and by having a list of resources available to reference to the parent.
