Discussion 2.1: What tools can be used to learn about children and their development? How do you use the tools? What do you need to know how to do?

One tool that can be used to learn about children and their development is Teaching Strategies GOLD online. This program helps educators organize their observations and create a personalized portfolio for each student. In order to use this tool, teachers must be able to assess what students already know and what they need to know in order to create developmentally appropriate lessons.
Another tool is High Scope Preschool COR. It provides tools for classroom management such as participating in small group time and introducing new materials to the classroom. Teachers need to know what their students are interested in and they must have an understanding of where the children need to be at their developmental age.
Teachers can also keep a checklist about the child to have a more quantitative assessment of the child's development. Teachers must make observations and interact the student at their level in order to effectively observe and assess the behaviors of the child.

Record keeping is a great tool to help the teacher look back and see how progress is hopefully taking place. Also, observing the children daily and seeing how they are learning and growing helps tremendously. You become attuned to children’s behavior patterns as well and how their day flows behavior wise as well.

Tools you can use to keep track of a child's development are forms of observation
  • Checklist: This form of observation allows you to keep track of certain developmental milestones
  • Running Record: This form of observation is a narrative account that details everything concerning a child's development during a period of time
  • Tally Event: This form of observation allows you to keep track of a certain event that is happening frequently during the day or with a certain child.
  • Photos & Videos: Allows you to capture children's skills and strenghts
These tools allow you to plan accordingly.

Other tools can include a daily schedule and lesson plan that is designed to meet a child's developmental needs and play materials that support and encourage developmental growth.

At my school we use Teaching Strategies Gold to keep track of and document the children's development.  By making lesson plans on TSG I am able to check off which objectives each activity is focusing on and balance out my lessons for the week appropriately.  I also am able to assess and document my observations of my primary care group within the website.  You simply need to get familiar with the website interface.

Tools that can be used are a running record, a checklist, photos/videos, or a tally event.

It is important to know how to use these following the WAC and communicate it properly.

Documentation of records is a good way to track student progress. There are plenty of online forums to use but for simplicity sake, paper records and pictures work just fine. These can include milestones and sample work.

A great way to keep track of children and their development is through observation. You can learn so much from observing a child interact with items and individuals. A childs movement, socialization, problem solving and many other important developing skills can be learned through the observation process. A great tool for this observation is record keeping.

Discussion 2.1 : What tools can be used to learn about children in their development? How do you use these tools? What do you need to know how to do?

Observation is one tool that can be used. Intentionally watching and observing a child in your care allows you as a teacher to learn about them, assess their current level of development, and then provided them with appropriate stimulation activities to further their individual learning.

Anecdotal record (a brief narrative) - a tool that can be used to record observations in the classroom.
Checklists – tracking developmental milestones can be used as well.
Running Record - a narrative where the observer details everything that occurs in a certain period of time.
Tally Event – a list that can help track how often something occurs during the day, or with a certain child.
Photos and videotaping – Using media to capture a child’s skills and strengths.

For all of these a teacher needs to know how to document using these different types of observation tools. You also need to know how and when to keep such documentation confidential.

Tools that can be used for teachers to track develop, are lists to check for ech child and milestone they hit or things they do in a day. For children to use tools and to develop they can have items and toys to use each day, like a mirror for example can help them see themselves and recognize what and who they are

To track development you want to keep a record of observations. Tools that can be used to do this are a brief record right after an event, photo/video, checklist, a tally for the event, or a written record of all events that occurred within a time frame. To use these tools you need to be able to recognize significant events that occur in order to document them, and how to document them while keeping the information confidential.
