Developing respectful and reciprocal relationships with families involves open conversation about struggles with child behavior, as well as successes. Being open in conversation, or simply willing to engage in conversation with families, helps them see that you are a trustworthy teacher. As a teacher, be able to acknowledge when you don’t know much about something essential to a family’s culture. Ask respective questions and be willing to learn/educate yourself. Having a deep understanding that respecting others opinions, different beliefs, etc., does not mean you must in that moment change your own is very important. Also know that those different opinions or beliefs are not an attack on your own. Don’t take another person’s life choices as a personal attack.
