The National Scientific Council on the Developing Child, 2010, shares some important findings on the infant brain. The council reports that development starts in the womb and continues after birth with a combination of nature and nurture. The quality of the relationship between the infant and primary caregiver sets the tone for growth. A child’s brain grows to fit its’ environment by connections (or synapses) made between neurons. The brain uses synapses to send impulses, controlling the body, mind, feelings, memory and language. Synapses are created and strengthened with use, and wither away if unused.
