It's important to understand that all families look and operate differently and while that should be taken into consideration, it's important that we communicate with every parental figure thoroughly and treat everybody with the same respect. All families who are interested enough to invest themselves should be given the chance, regardless of what that family looks like. All families should be respected and listened to, because they need to feel supported by their child's educator as well as support their child's educator.

It is important to take the time to reach out to each and every family and get to know them. Each family should be given the same level interest and treated with the same dignity as all other families regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, religion or culture. All of those things should be equally celebrated and learned about.

To ensure that all families receive encouragement in supporting the development of their children, extensive communication between teachers and families should occur. Teachers should ask questions like, "What does your child really enjoy doing?" These types of questions not only help the family reflect on their relationship with their children, but creates a medium for comparison between home and school. Understanding differences in children's behavior allows both teachers and parents to collaborate and create a comparable, supportive environment for children.

Projects also pose a great opportunity to support families. For example, a project in which families provide family photos for use in a collage or painting creates support on both the school and family's side. Children interpret their families as being involved and supportive of their work, and the school is able to get to know the children and form good relationships with their families.

Events like Holiday celebrations and birthday parties are also an opportunity to support all families. By encouraging families of all ethnicities and family styles to, for example, come and read a story to the class on their child's birthday, inclusive and collaborative relationships are created.

Today Families come in all shapes and sizes. It is not for me to judge the family unit of my children, but to provide a safe, loving and learning environment for all of them.

It is important as the teacher to make an effort to get to know the family of the child in their care. This includes meeting anyone who is regularly taking care of the child, bringing them to and from school, etc. It could be helpful to discuss with the primary caregivers who should be included on any correspondence about the child so that all information communicated from the school to the family is shared and accessible to those who need it. It is crucial to be sensitive to any changes in family situation that may occur during the year such as a divorce or a move. These will directly affect the child and it is important during those times to be understanding of irregular arrangements or of changes in the behavior of the child. Conferences are a great time to discuss these things as well as times that parents can share with the teacher how their child is at home or anything that they have noticed.

As a teacher, we need to cooperate with the families on the development of each child. A good communication between the teachers and family is the strong key to supporting the development of the kids.
