Executive function is the cover term for the three major functions that develop in early childhood. When all of the functions are put together they represent something like an airport with multiple events happening at once with different demands.

Executive Functioning is the brains "Air Traffic Control System", enabling the brain and the body the ability to deal with multiple information and distraction at one time. Toxic Stress is caused by physical or emotional abuse, chronic neglect, caregiver substance abuse or mental illness.

Executive functioning is the brains ability to deal with multiple forms of information at once. For example, it gives one the ability to perform more than one task at a time, work with distractions and adapt to a change in rules. It plays a major part in problem solving, making plans and executing them. Toxic stress is a direct threat to developing the ability of executive functioning. If a child is in distress and their needs are not met, after a while their stress levels and adrenaline simply remain on alert so to speak.
