Culture is a complex force that can shape a person's identity in obvious and less apparent ways. Shallow culture refers to cultural attributes one could notice easily with an etic perspective: such as the clothing someone wears and the foods they eat. Deep culture refers to elements of a person's culture that may not be obvious to others that do not share that cultural experience, such as values, gender roles, and behavioral expectations for kids. Childcare professionals must make an effort to respect the shallow and deep cultural attributes of children in their care. This may take some research, a lot of listening, and work finding ways to make sure each child feels represented and welcomed in the space.
